Optimising thermal performance of encoder scale
Most industrial machines involve energy input and conversion, such as moving elements of the machine or processing a workpiece by transferring energy to it in some way. These processes will tend to have a heating effect on the machine and, as the temperature of the machine changes, parts of the machine will change length due to thermal expansion.
Encoder scales are also susceptible to thermal expansion and their change in length can lead to small, undetectable errors in position measurement.
The thermal expansion behaviour of encoder scales can be managed by different mounting techniques to reduce these measurement errors. The two main scale mounting methods are substrate mastered and floating.
Substrate mastered scale: A thin (~ 0.15 mm thick) continuous steel scale is mounted to a machine substrate by self-adhesive tape along its length and secured with rigid end clamps. Due to the low profile of the scale, it will thermally expand and contract in exactly the same way as the underlying substrate of the machine.
Floating scale: A continuous steel scale is installed either with self-adhesive backing tape or in a mounting track so that it is substantially free to expand or contract independently of the substrate. The expansion of the scale is dominated by the Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) and temperature of the scale itself.
- Typical thermal change cycle of the operating environment
- Length of the measured axis
- CTE of the workpiece, the machine substrate and the scale
- Use of temperature compensation in the control system
Mastered scale may be preferred in some systems, such as environments with substantial temperature cycling and machine structures with low conductivity and high thermal mass. As the mounting substrate will be slow to change temperature, mastering the scale substantially reduces the thermal length changes experienced by the scale and reduces any associated measurement errors.
Alternatively, floating scale may be preferred in situations where the workpiece CTE is similar to the machine substrate CTE, such as an
SMT pick-and-place machine. In this situation the floating steel scale will expand with its known CTE, which is similar to the X-Y CTE for FR-4 PCB substrates. This small mis-match in CTE also helps to minimise errors when applying active thermal compensation.
